Canadian Tire Mastercards are probably the most underrated credit cards. I know very few people around me who have them, and yet they are rich in rewards. If you’re interested in learning more about the benefits they provide, this article is for you.
With the following information, it will be easier for you to determine which is the best credit card for you from among the 4 cards offered on the Canadian Tire Financial Services website. You can also use this comparison tool to make an informed choice.
Note, however, that certain features are common to these Mastercards. They are all free of charge and you can get several additional cards for free. The interest rate on purchases is 19.99% and 22.99% on cash advances and balance transfers. In order to be eligible for these cards, you must be of legal age to own a credit card in your province, be a Canadian resident, and be employed or retired. I invite you to read this article to find out how to choose a credit card. You can also read this article to fully understand everything you need to know about credit cards.
The Triangle Mastercard helps you save on expenses for fuel, groceries and purchases in participating stores. You earn these savings through Canadian Tire Money (CT) reward points. You can track your points with the Triangle mobile app, and can also track your spending, verify your account information in real time, and receive exclusive offers tailored to your needs. Here are the rewards you can earn with this card:
▪ For fuel, you get a 5¢ per liter cash back in CT money at the following gas stations: Gasoline +, Gas + and participating Husky stations.
▪ For groceries, you can earn 1.5% in CT money on all grocery expenses on the first $12,000 per year. However, you don’t earn any points when you shop at Costco Wholesale or Walmart, whether online or in person.
▪ For purchases, you earn 4% in CT money at the following retailers: Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Sports Rousseau, Hockey Experts, L’Entrepôt du Hockey, at participating Mark’s, L’Équipeur and Sports Experts stores.
As a welcome bonus, for a limited time, you get 15% Canadian Tire (CT) money on your first purchase.
Lastly, there are several other benefits with this card. You can easily return your items to participating merchants without a receipt. You will be the first to know about exclusive events and additional discounts on several products from the various stores named above. You also benefit from 24/7 customer service.
Triangle World Elite Mastercard
Like the Triangle Mastercard, the Triangle World Elite Mastercard offers numerous rewards for fuel, groceries, and spending at participating stores. However, it does provide greater rewards, as well as additional benefits.
For fuel, this card offers a 7¢ per liter rebate in CT money on “Super” type gasoline at the following stations: Gasoline +, Gas + and participating Husky stations. For other types of fuel, the reduction is 5¢ per liter in CT money at these same stations.
For groceries, you earn 3% CT money on the first $12,000 spent per year with the card. This is double the number of grocery rewards compared to the base Triangle card. But like the latter, you don’t earn any CT money points when you shop at Costco Wholesale or Walmart.
Like the Triangle Mastercard, you earn 4% CT money on all purchases at the following stores: Canadian Tire, Sport Chek, Atmosphere, Sports Rousseau, Hockey Experts, L’Entrepôt du Hockey, and at participating Mark’s, L’Équipeur and Sports Experts locations.
In addition to the benefits offered for the Triangle Mastercard, you benefit from a Roadside Assistance Gold Plan that helps you when you have a problem with your vehicle. You also get collision/damage insurance on rental vehicles. As for purchase protection, you get an extended warranty and zero liability purchase protection for purchases made within the last 90 days. You also have access to a concierge service available at all times. This enhanced customer service puts you into a priority queue when you contact the Canadian Tire Bank call centre.
An annual income of $80,000 is required in order to be eligible for this card.
Gas Advantage Mastercard
Unlike the other two, this one is especially designed for fuel rewards. Depending on the amount spent with this credit card, you earn reductions on fuel ranging from 2¢ to 10¢ per liter.
When you spend less than $500 per month with your card, you get a 2¢ per liter rebate that’s instantly charged to the filling station before you even start filling up. For expenses ranging from $500 to $999 per month, the discount is 5¢ per liter. You get an 8¢ per liter rebate instantly for monthly expenses ranging from $1000 to $1999. The rebate climbs to 10¢ per liter when you use your card for purchases over $2000 in a single bill cycle.
All your purchases made with the Gas Advantage Mastercard are eligible in order to access these discounts. You can double your points on every liter when you shop at Canadian Tire stores, order by phone or from the catalogue, on the Canadian Tire website or at L’Équipeur/Mark’s Work Wearhouse stores.
You can use the application to see your balance online and you can make payments online through it. You also have access to customer service available at all times, and you will receive an email notice regarding the availability of your electronic statement.
Cash Advantage Mastercard
For this last card, instead of getting discounts on fuel or CT money, you get cash back rewards that are automatically applied to your account. Some cash back credit cards have limits on the amount of the cash back, but the Cash Advantage Mastercard does not have a limit.
When you shop at Canadian Tire stores and gas stations or at Mark’s/L’Équipeur stores, you get up to 3% cash back. For all other in-store purchases you get 1.5% cash back.
It provides the same benefits as the Gas Advantage Mastercard.
The best Canadian Tire credit card
Now, you might be wondering which is the best Canadian Tire credit card. I would answer that it depends on your needs and your consumption habits. If you are looking for a fuel-only card, the Gas Advantage Mastercard is the solution for you. It’s a card that you can use anywhere and can save you a lot more money on fuel than others.
If you’re looking for a card that can save you money on fuel, groceries, or anything else, I recommend the Triangle World Elite Mastercard or the Triangle Mastercard. Note, however, that the Triangle World Elite Mastercard is only available to people with an annual income of $80,000, which reduces its accessibility. The demand for this famous card may also be temporarily unavailable. Thanks to this comparison tool, we can see that the only differences between these two cards are the amount of CT money cash back on groceries. The reduction per liter of the “Super” gasoline type is also higher for the Triangle World Elite Mastercard. But the Triangle Mastercard currently has a special offer that the Triangle World Elite Mastercard does not. It is for these reasons that the Triangle Mastercard is in my opinion a better option than the Triangle World Elite Mastercard at the time of publishing this article.
Lastly, if you prefer cash back rewards and don’t want to know anything about CT money, the Cash Advantage Mastercard is a great option. Its rebate rate for “all other purchases” is much higher than the average credit card. In fact, for a card that requires no minimum income and has no annual fee, it offers 1.5% compared to 0.5% with other no-fee credit cards. See for yourself using this comparison tool. With this rate, this Mastercard is very advantageous if your goal is to maximize your cash back rewards.
